NETGEAR Nighthawk Router (RAXE500)

The Netgear Nighthawk RAXE500 innovates with the first Wi-Fi 6e router that moves data over the 2.4-, 5- and 6GHz frequency bands, combining the sharp looks of Netgear’s current routers with the latest and greatest Wi-Fi standard. With an AXE11000 rating, the tri-band device more than lives up to the hype by delivering nearly 2.5Gbps of real-world data. On the downside, the RAXE500’s bandwidth falls off sharply as you get farther from the router. Still, it managed an impressive 105-foot range.

Our Netgear Nighthawk RAXE500 review shows that the new Wi-Fi 6e router adds lots of configuration options to the category-leading short-range performance, while keeping devices and the network clean with Netgear’s Armor security software. Unfortunately, Netgear makes extended protection and additional security updates a subscription-based extra that could add nearly $200 to the already spendy price of the RAXE500. Still, if you crave the newest, fastest and coolest looking router around, the Netgear Nighthawk RAXE500 fits the bill as one of the best Wi-Fi routers you can buy.

Netgear Nighthawk RAXE500 review: Performance

One of the standout features of this router is its ability to operate in the 6GHz frequency band, which is part of the new Wi-Fi 6E standard. This band provides more available spectrum and less interference, resulting in faster speeds and lower latency. In addition, the RAXE500 can also operate in the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, allowing it to seamlessly switch between bands for optimal performance.

In terms of performance, the RAXE500 delivers exceptional speeds, with a peak throughput of 2.396Gbps at 15 feet. This is achieved using the RAXE500’s SmartConnect feature, which automatically assigns devices to the best available band. This feature, combined with the router’s powerful hardware, makes it an excellent choice for gaming and other bandwidth-intensive activities.

However, the RAXE500’s performance does fall off quickly with distance, which is a common issue with many routers. At 50 feet, the total throughput drops to 215.8Mbps, which is well off the pace set by some of its competitors. That being said, the RAXE500 still has an impressive range of 105 feet and is one of the best at distributing Wi-Fi throughout an older home with thick walls and floors.

Another important aspect to consider when choosing a router is power consumption. The RAXE500 uses a peak of 15.4 watts of power, which drops to 5.4 watts when idle. Based on average electricity prices, the system should cost around $13.70 a year to use, which is slightly more expensive than some of its competitors.

Overall, the Nighthawk RAXE500 is a top-performing router that delivers exceptional speeds and is ideal for those who require high-speed connectivity for gaming, streaming, and other bandwidth-intensive activities. While it does have some limitations in terms of range and power consumption, its performance and features make it a worthwhile investment for those in need of a high-performance router.
